Finspan: Sharks and Reefs adds to the variety of the core game with a focus on sharks and fish that live among coral reefs.
The expansion adds some new card abilities, along with an overlay that encourages players to create a thriving coral reef.
Eighty new fish cards is a lot more variety than I expected from an expansion, and the coral tokens finally give the reefs something to do besides sit there. We've played four times since it arrived and haven't seen the same setup twice.
The reef overlay mats slot in smoothly and make each round feel more strategic without bogging anything down. I've played through twice now and the 80 new shark and reef cards really keep the variety fresh. My favorite touch is how the coral tokens pile up for that extra scoring push.
These new reef overlay mats change the whole feel of the game, making the shark and coral cards feel truly integrated rather than just slapped on. The 75 coral tokens add a great layer of resource tension that the base game was missing.
