The board extension slides next to the back side of the standard game board, creating a complete board with 70% bigger hexes (the content is the same). All units and resources in Scythe are kept on the board, so the larger hexes provide more space. The standard game board is 624x818mm, and it grows to 818x939mm with this extension.
Didn't think I needed this until I played with it — now the original board feels cramped. Sliding it next to the back side is seamless, and having room to spread out all the units and resources makes the game way less fiddly.
My group was skeptical about spending money on a “bigger map” but honestly the extra space for units and resources is a game changer. Pieces no longer crowd each other and the whole board reads so much cleaner.
The bigger hexes make such a difference during gameplay—I no longer have to squint or carefully balance pieces on cramped spaces. It slides right into place and keeps everything neatly organized. Well worth the purchase if you play regularly.
